The camel festival is held for two days in January every year. The aim of this Indian festival is to create awareness on the heritage that Bikaner city is so proud of. The Art Department of Rajasthan Tourism always organizes and sponsors this event, the main aim being to attract more and more tourists.
Bikaner city lies in desert region and no other animal can survive successfully the way the camel does. People in Bikaner city are heavily dependent on the camel for transport services. Although much of the pressure that has traditionally been placed on the ship of the desert has been eased, the cultural ties between the people of Bikaner city and their camels still remain. The Camel Festival relives these cultural links in a way that only local residents can understand.
The start of the Camel festival is usually a parade of very beautifully-decorated camels that kicks off at Junagarh Fort. The main aim of a camel owner is to ensure that his beast doesn’t appear inferior to other camels. Bridles and saddles used to decorate them are ornately colorful just like the whole Indian culture. Camels with anklets around their feet definitely look more attractive than those without them. The basis of judging depends on which aspects spectators are interested in during the festival. Sometimes it might be the fur cut, and at other times the breed of the camel determines the winner.
The camel dance is the most interesting event of the day. Also, camel owners who double as the trainers have to come in and do a performance. Nothing is as amazing during this festival than witnessing camels performing in response to the instructions given by their trainers. The footwork of the camel dance with traditional Indian music is a great fun of the festival. The second day of the event witnesses a rather interesting event, the ultimate camel racing. This is an event that takes the form of a derby. Only the best camels have a chance to perform at camel racing.
As the day comes to an end, it is time for local entertainers to take over from the camels and cheer up the crowds with some traditional Indian dances. Tradition meets festivals as residents of the city mill around malls to buy sweets that have been made using camel milk. You need to witness such a thrilling action that takes place against the backdrop of the warm evening desert air of Rajasthan. The Camel festival manifests the Indian culture. During the Camel Festival, the local artists perform traditional Indian music and women perform traditional Indian dances in their traditional garments.
You may also enjoy Camel Safari during the Camel festival. Having a ride on a camel in the Desert Thar is also another great fun activity. You can take photos of the beautiful sunset in the Desert Thar during the Camel Safari. You have several options of Camel Safari tours including food, music and dance organizations.
Camel Festival is also a good opportunity for shopping. During your Camel Safari, you can stop by the bazaars in Rajasthan and Bikaner. Handicraft products in bright colors, beadings, carpets, fabrics, Indian food and especially camel leather works will be waiting for you.
It is not advisable to travel to Bikaner by air. The nearest airport is in Jodhapur, almost 240 km away. There is a railway that links various parts of the larger Indian sub-continent. The major cities served by the railway are Jaipur, Delhi, and Churu. You can always find trains that ply these routes on a regular basis. Pushkar is a very small town with a population of only 15,000 but this population increases tenfold during the Camel as everyone prepares for the traditional events that make up the Camel festival.
