Celebrities in Rio add more fun to the carnival. Especially Madonna and Paris Hilton have been center of attention during the Rio Carnival which has begun on February 12th. Scottish actor Gerard Butler also seemed to enjoy the carnival fun.
Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro presented King Momo with the gold key to the city during the official opening of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. It is declared that strict security measures are taken to ensure peace and safety of visitors during the Rio Carnival. As Rio de Janeiro will be hosting the 2016 Olympic Games, this will be an opportunity for this colorful city to show the ability of providing the safety of the visitors. Government declared that not even the simplest criminal offense will be tolerated and outbursts of drunken violence or urinate on the streets will be punished. More than 100 people have already been arrested since the opening. Rio de Janeiro aims for changing the reputation for high crime rates during Rio Carnival 2010, however some argue that such restrictions and too strict security may disturb the exciting atmosphere of the Rio de Janeiro carnival.
Madonna, who joined the Rio Carnival fun with her two children and Brazilian boyfriend Jesus Luz, attempted to perform some samba steps during the carnival parade. However the crowd and the security agents prevented Madonna from joining the parade fun. She had to watch the carnival parade from VIP box as the guest of Sergio Cabral, the Rio governor.

The Knysna Oyster Festival was started in 1983 in Western Cape, South Africa. The initiator was the late Dick Ginsberg, a successful local businessman. The inaugural ‘Knysna Winter Festival’ organized by the Knysna Publicity Committee drew huge audiences and participants who made the marathon, golf, rugby, and bowls tournament an instant success.
During the 1984 Knysna Oyster Festival, the Navy got involved in the organization process. The Chief of the Navy visited Knysna accompanied by a navy minesweeper and several crew members. Again in 1988, a conferment was made on the army during the Freedom of Entry event that marked the historic participation of the municipal authorities in Knysna. The aim of the festival remains to attract as many people to the sporting competitions during the winter period when many people are characteristically passive.
 Oyster eating competition The 1985 event saw the inclusion of Argus cycling tours into the Knysna Oyser festival. As the attention slowly shifts to the 2009 event, it is the dream of every South African career cyclist to feature in the challenging and adventurous Knysna Forest Marathon that always comes with a great fun for both the participants and the spectators.
The Knysna Oyster Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and it is expected that a visit by navy officials will make all South African people shift the spotlight to the amazing sporting event.

Cape Town Festival, that takes place every year has an essential role in African culture. This festival brings together the residents of The Mother City, as South Africans refer to Cape Town. Held prior to Lent each year, the festival is a great fun and an extravaganza of color and festivities to which many thousands of people flock each and every year. The Rio de Janeiro Carnival celebration dates back to 1723 when it started out as a pre-Lent festival – much like many carnivals around the world. Carnivals were initially intended as religious celebrations and contained offerings to Roman gods. Modern day carnivals, however, are far removed from their initial roots and have become vast celebrations of enjoyment for local people to embrace the rich mixture of cultures which influence each and every carnival worldwide.
 Rio de Janeiro Carnival Today, the Rio de Janeiro carnival is perhaps best known for its famous carnival parade, which first took place in the 1930s. Since samba dance is the essence of the Rio de Janerio carnival, the parade is also called samba parade. Samba comes from an Afro-Brazilian dance. Some steps and motions were added to the dance for samba parade of the carnival and became what is known as Brazilian samba dance which is not a dance of couples.
The carnival parade starts on the Sunday evening and goes through until the Monday morning, with the majority of the carnival celebration taking place in the Sambadrome in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

It should be noted that samba schools are not traditional schools. Samba schools in Brazil are basically social and cultural groups that meet at regular intervals to learn and perform Brazilian samba dance, music and carnival costumes. One folklore says that the term ‘school’ originated from the time when the early sambistas used to rehearse near a teachers’ college.
